Chicago Dixieland (1927)

Bix Beiderbecke, cornet; Frankie Trumbauer, C-melody saxophone;
Eddie Lang, guitar; Bill Rank, trombone; Jimmy Dorsey, clarinet and alto sax; Itzy Riskin, piano; Chaunsey Morehouse, drums.

This performance features solos from Bix Beiderbecke on cornet and Frankie Trumbauer on C-melody sax. The most interesting feature in this song is the use of the guitar as the leading rhythm section instrument (especially surprising since the guitar was usually more of a background instrument). A piano can be heard in the background but the drive comes from the strumming. Notice the arpeggios in the guitar that are used to fill between phrases and accompany the soloists. Notice the accents on the second and fourth beats of the measure creating a 2/4 feel (especially in the collective improvisations).
